Squanto: A Warrior's Tale (1994)

In the heart of the 17th century, a noble Native American named Squanto (Adam Beach) graces the virgin landscape of the Atlantic coast. His tribe's existence, harmoniously woven into the fabric of nature, is spent hunting and engaging in friendly rivalries with neighboring tribes. Life's rhythm changes drastically when a ship, a harbinger of doom and ambition, arrives from England. The vessel, driven by the insatiable greed of Sir George (Sir Michael Gambon), a man with wealth and influence, explores the region's commercial potential. In their wake, they leave a trail of destruction and captivity, snatching several Indians, including Squanto, back to England. In the heart of the Old World, Squanto and his fellow captive, Epenow (Eric Schweig), from the Nauset tribe, are paraded around like exotic curiosities in a circus. Encased in a world where the arrogant "Christians" deem themselves superior, they are subjected to brutalities akin to wild beasts. Squanto's spirit remains unbowed as he battles a bear in the circus, his heart aching at the spectacle of man's cruelty to man and beast alike. A daring escape leads him to the tranquil solace of a rural monastery where he finds unexpected allies. With the monks' assistance, Squanto learns the English language and the ways of the white man, yet his heart yearns for his lost love, Nakooma (Irene Bedard). His tranquility is shattered when Sir George's men ruthlessly hunt him down, but Squanto's will to live and return home is unyielding. His second escape, fueled by determination, sets him on a perilous journey back across the ocean to a home that is forever changed.
