In the aftermath of the Great War in 1919, an unassuming Gerald Brenan, fueled by his passion for prose and literature, finds himself residing in a quaint house in Yegen, nestled in the heart of Alpujarra. As the outsider in this rustic village, his presence soon stirs curiosity among the local populace. His dedicated maid, María, eyes him as a potential suitor for her eligible daughter, Ángeles, while the enigmatic Paco takes it upon himself to acquaint Gerald with the village's customs and the labyrinth of love. The town's fervent priest, his hospitable landlady, her devout friend who holds Saint Teresa in high esteem, and the enchanting Juliana, offspring of a reputed witch, all vie for his attention. In the midst of these intricate local dynamics, Gerald must navigate his emotions and thwart the schemes of the village women who envision a future he isn't prepared for.
