Sounder (1972)

In the heart of 1933 Lansdowne Parish, Louisiana, we find ourselves amidst the lives of the Morgans - a close-knit, black, sharecropping family. Nathan Lee and Rebecca, the nurturing parents, and their three children David Lee, Josie Mae, and Earl, combat poverty with love and resilience, earning them a revered place within their community. Nathan Lee's prowess in hunting, aided by Sounder, their loyal hound, ensures their survival during the harsh non-cropping seasons. However, the struggle to provide intensifies, leading to Nathan committing a desperate act of theft to feed his family. This single act unravels the Morgans' existence when Nathan is convicted and sentenced to a year of hard labor. With Sounder nowhere to be found, the baton of responsibility falls upon the young shoulders of David Lee, who is now torn between his familial duties and his hunger for formal education. The young boy's world is turned upside down as he steps into his father's shoes and embarks on a journey filled with revelations about black American history, a subject previously unknown to him. As David Lee grapples with his newfound responsibilities, he is sent on a poignant odyssey to visit his incarcerated father. This journey is marked by a transformative stay with a dedicated black schoolteacher, further fueling his thirst for knowledge. The return of Nathan Lee home, coupled with David Lee's growing awareness of his heritage and his place in the world, intertwines the familial bond with the struggle for self-identity, making Sounder an evocative exploration of the human spirit against the backdrop of racial and economic adversity.
