Sole (2019)

In a world where currency is the ultimate measure of worth, Lena, seven months along in her pregnancy, is prepared to sell the life growing within her. Ermanno, a stranger to Lena, agrees to pose as the expectant father. The puppeteer pulling their strings is Fabio, Ermanno's uncle, who along with his wife Bianca, is unable to conceive. Italy's laws forbid surrogate motherhood, prompting this elaborate charade of a familial adoption, a cunning circumvention of strict legal boundaries. Thrust into a make-believe romance, Ermanno and Lena must present a united front to the world, sharing a living space until the baby is born. Both accustomed to a solitary existence, they constantly find themselves at odds. Yet, as they navigate their contrived partnership, they begin to morph into the very illusion they were hired to create. This is a tale of two strangers, caught in a web of deception and desperation, gradually unravelling the thin line between pretence and reality.
