Plot

Embarking on a journey of love, longing, and life's messy realities, we meet Zoe Crandle (Noel Wells), a spirited yet stalled entrepreneur stuck in a whirlwind of ill-fated one-night stands and a failing waxing business, House of Wax, in Austin's vibrant independent business strip. Battling against the dazzling competition from Lazer Town across the street, Zoe's dreams are slowly melting like the wax in her salon. Living in a mobile trailer parked on rented land, her hand-to-mouth existence is a stark contrast to her best friend Claire's successful life as a music manager. Yet, unlike Claire, Zoe has never tasted the sweetness of love, her string of romantic misadventures only captured in Polaroids as bitter reminders of a love life that never blossomed. Across the street, Paul (Josh Radnor) is a mirror image of Zoe's chaotic existence. He owns Vulture, a video store crumbling under the weight of digital revolution and his passion for films over profits. His wife Jane, a success-driven lawyer, shoulders the financial burden, leaving no room for romance in their relationship. Despite her disdain, Paul's love for Jane remains unwavering, his devotion only rivaled by the adoration for their three children. Amidst this mess, Zoe and Paul's paths cross at Lana and Peter's wedding, igniting an immediate emotional and physical spark. As they grapple with their entangled lives, they are drawn deeper into this unconventional love story. Will their mutual attraction lead to an unexpected love affair, or will it be another Polaroid in Zoe's collection of failed romances? Set against the backdrop of the eclectic Austin scene, Social Animals explores the convoluted world of "adulting," where love, ambition, and the pursuit of happiness collide in unexpected ways. This tale of two lost souls entwines humor, heartache, and the raw realities of life, inviting viewers into a captivating exploration of what it truly means to grow up.
