Shadow of Suspicion (1944)

In the heart of Chicago, the dazzling and priceless Morgan emerald bracelet vanishes from Cartell & Co., a high-end jewelry company, leaving the case cold and unsolved. The company's Chicago branch manager, Frank Randall, is thrust into a whirlwind of suspense upon learning of another precious item passing through his branch: the illustrious Stonehaven diamond necklace, valued at a staggering $250,000 and eyed by San Francisco's affluent collectors, the Vanderbrooks. The plot thickens as Henry T. Adams, a client with an unsettled check, confesses to being Everett G. Northrup, an undercover security investigator sent by the head office to ensure the necklace's safe passage. Randall, wary of this sudden confession, contacts the head office to find that the real Northrup is in New York, revealing the Chicago Northrup as a cunning imposter. A game of cat and mouse ensues as the genuine Northrup is brought to Chicago to help Randall trap the imposter. They devise a plan where Northrup morphs into James Dale, a supposed secretary assigned to the faux Northrup. Unknown to them, the real Northrup is in league with the imposter, whose true identity is James Dale, a brash ladies' man with a knack for charm and deception. As Dale plots his audacious heist, he's caught in a web of rising tension and emotional turmoil, primarily due to his growing affection for Claire Winter, Randall's unsuspecting secretary. Dale finds himself walking a tightrope between his criminal endeavor and the potential harm that could befall Claire, threatening to shatter their budding romance and revealing the shadow of suspicion that lurks beneath the glittering world of high-stakes jewel heists.
