Plot

In the tranquil expanse of rural Vermont, Lane resides in a sprawling property, a legacy from her charismatic, hard-drinking ex-actress mother, Diane. The estate, a monument to bygone love, bought by Diane and Lane's late father Richard before her birth, now serves as Lane's sanctuary. She has sought refuge here following a harrowing suicide attempt, battling depression rooted in a traumatic past incident: The fatal shooting of her mother's abusive lover, a man Diane abandoned Richard for, when Lane was just fourteen. Lane's days are colored by the company of two neighboring men: Howard, a French teacher nursing unrequited love for her, and Peter, a former Madison Avenue executive turned aspiring writer, who has captured her affections. As the summer wanes, Stephanie, Lane's best friend from Philadelphia, finds solace in Lane's home, escaping her own marital discontent while supporting Lane through her ordeal. Unbeknownst to Lane, Peter finds himself smitten by Stephanie, a secret love that Stephanie vows not to entertain due to Lane's feelings for him. Feeling ready to embrace a fresh start, Lane contemplates selling her pastoral haven to clear her medical debts, with plans to return to the bustling energy of New York City and establish a photography business. However, the sudden return of Diane and her supportive physicist husband, Lloyd, threatens to upend Lane's plans. Diane's desire for Peter to pen her memoirs and a startling revelation from her dredge up the ghosts of Lane's painful past she thought she had left far behind, potentially derailing the tracks of her newfound resolve.
