Saviors in the Night (2009)

In the throes of 1943's Münsterland, decorated WWI veteran Siegmund Spiegel, affectionately known as Menne, confronts the iron grip of persecution under the infamous Nazi regime. A Jew in an increasingly hostile homeland, Menne's life teeters on the precipice of extermination. On the eve of his family's scheduled deportation, a fate from which no Jew has ever returned, Menne seeks the help of his old war friend, Hermann Aschoff. Braving the jaws of peril, Hermann steps forward to shelter Menne's wife, Marga, and their young daughter, Karin, at his rustic farmhouse nestled in the outskirts of Capelle. The Spiegel women must shed their identities and don the guise of gentiles, adopting the surname Krone and concocting a backstory as evacuees from war-ravaged Dortmund. Menne, however, bears the unmistakable visage of a Jew, compelling him to vanish into the shadows. As Marga and Karin's sanctuary morphs into a high-stakes game of subterfuge, the Aschoff family's loyalties are put to the test. Their eldest son, Klemens, is off to fight on the Russian front, while their daughter, Anni, is a staunch member of the German Girls' League, a bastion of Nazi support. Furthermore, Anni's friend Erich, the regional Boys' League leader, is a constant presence, his interest in Anni potentially threatening the Spiegels' fragile safety. Based on Marga Spiegel's memoir, published in 1965, Saviors in the Night is a tale of ordinary farmers' extraordinary courage. Unfazed by danger, these rustic guardians, guided by instinct and a centuries-old code of ethics, offer their protection to the refugees. They risk their lives and those of their families, embodying the essence of friendship, reliability, and humanity without ever considering themselves heroes. Their actions create ripples in the turbulent waters of history, ultimately safeguarding the Spiegel family from the malevolent clutches of the Nazi regime.
