Ruby (1977)

In the murky swamps of 1935, mobster Nicky Rocco meets his untimely demise, betrayed and executed by his own comrades while his expectant lover, Ruby Claire, witnesses the shocking scene. As the echoes of Nicky's vengeful dying declaration fill the air, Ruby is thrust into labour, marking the eerie birth of their daughter, Leslie Claire. Fast-forward to 1951, Ruby stands as the proprietress of a secluded drive-in theatre nestled in the backwoods, a motley crew of ex-mobsters at her command. Leslie, now sixteen, has been mute since birth - a silent enigma in their strange world. The theatre becomes a macabre stage as employees start falling prey to a series of chilling, inexplicable accidents. As the body count rises, Leslie's behaviour takes an unsettling turn. Her silence shatters, replaced by a voice from the grave - Nicky Rocco's voice. A chilling possession unfolds, with a vengeful Nicky using Leslie's body as a conduit to unleash his wrath, tormenting Ruby with levitating horrors, telekinetic mayhem, maniacal laughter and a wave of disturbing aggression. Meanwhile, a visiting psychic steps into the escalating chaos, hinting at an otherworldly retribution. As the boundaries between life and death blur, Ruby must confront the spectral vengeance of her past, twisting her drive-in theatre into a battleground where the living and the dead clash in a haunting dance of terror.
