Plot

In the heart of Flint, Michigan, a town that pulses with the rhythm of General Motors (GM)—the world's largest corporation—resides filmmaker Michael Moore, a native son deeply woven into its fabric. The city's prosperity and GM's success are two sides of the same coin, each flourishing because of the other. However, a shocking decision by GM Chair, Roger B. Smith, sets off a seismic shift that sends ripples through Flint's once-thriving landscape. Smith's choice to shutter eleven GM plants, primarily in Flint, eradicates a staggering 30,000 jobs, leaving the city's heartbeat faltering. Despite GM continuing to amass profits in the billions, the jobs are transferred to new horizons in Mexico, where labor comes cheap. This move leaves Flint gasping for air, its lifeblood draining away. Moore, driven by a sense of responsibility and curiosity, embarks on a formidable quest to confront Smith. He seeks to uncover Smith's reasoning behind the devastating job displacement and to expose him to the wreckage left in the wake of his decision. However, Moore's journey proves to be an uphill battle. With every step towards Smith, he is met with barriers in the form of unyielding security guards and evasive maneuvers. Meanwhile, he also explores the trials and tribulations of the average ex-GM worker and their family, painting a poignant picture of a city in the throes of reinvention. "Roger & Me" is a documentary that charts Moore's relentless pursuit for an interview with the elusive GM CEO, against the backdrop of a city grappling with monumental loss. It offers a riveting insight into the aftermath of massive job loss and a community's indomitable spirit to survive and redefine itself amidst adversity.
