Replicant (2001)

In the shadow-ridden underbelly of Seattle, a sinister specter known as Edward "The Torch" Garrotte lurks, a ruthless serial killer notorious for his grim penchant for murdering mothers and then setting their bodies alight. For three relentless years, seasoned police detective Jake Riley has been embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with the Torch, his retirement looming just as Garrotte strikes again. Suddenly, the case is pulled from under him, but his respite is short-lived when a clandestine government agency pulls him back into the fray. With a project as extraordinary as it is unsettling, the agency unveils a clone of Garrotte, a replicant created from DNA evidence scavenged from a crime scene. The Replicant (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is an unnerving mirror of Garrotte, bearing the murderer's genetic memories and a telepathic link, but possesses the innocence and curiosity of a newborn. Despite his formidable 40-year-old physique, he has the mind of a child. Riley becomes an unwilling tutor, tasked to mold the Replicant into a tool to ensnare Garrotte using the killer's own memories encoded in his DNA. Yet, as they delve deeper into the hunt, the tension escalates. Riley harbors a gnawing fear that Garrotte's born killer instinct might awaken within the Replicant, turning him into a ticking time-bomb that could explode any moment. Meanwhile, the Replicant grapples with his nascent understanding of the world, his inexplicable connection with a murderer, and his turbulent relationship with Riley. Despite the harsh treatment he receives, the Replicant perceives Riley as a protector, a guide, and perhaps even a friend or family. In this twisted dance of duplicity and identity, they must work together to unmask and eliminate Garrotte, navigating a path that questions whether anyone is truly born a murderer.
