Relentless (1948)

In the heart of a rustic local saloon, two seasoned prospectors, Len Briggs and Bob Pliny, revel in their newfound gold fortune. Their joyous tales catch the attention of the nefarious duo, Tex Brandaw and Jim Rupple, who scheme to seize the golden bounty for themselves. Amidst this brewing storm, a wandering drifter, Nick Buckley, arrives in town seeking refuge for his expectant mare. The jubilant prospectors extend their hospitality to him, offering a drink and a night's shelter in their humble shack. However, the cunning Tex redirects Nick to an empty stall in the town stables instead. As the prospectors return to their cabin, they walk into the fatal ambush set by Tex and Jim. After procuring the map to the gold mine, the villains part ways, each with half of the map, to reconvene later. However, Tex's greed knows no bounds. He double-crosses Jim, seizing his half of the map and leaving him injured. An unexpected encounter with Nick sets Jim on a desperate pursuit to reclaim his treasure. He commandeers Nick's mare, leaving her to die on the trail after an exhausting chase. Fueled by rage, Nick confronts Jim, culminating in a deadly gunfight that leaves Jim dead and Nick holding the smoking gun. Unbeknownst to Nick, the entire showdown is witnessed by Tex, who swiftly assumes the guise of a concerned passerby. He assures Nick of his support and offers to report the incident to the sheriff, allowing Nick to tend to his newborn foal. However, Tex betrays Nick, accusing him of the murders of Jim and the prospectors. Unaware of his newfound outlaw status, Nick encounters Luella Purdy, a traveling general store owner he had met in town. She lends a sympathetic ear to his story and offers help with his struggling foal. Their tranquility is short-lived when the sheriff arrives, accusing Nick of the brutal murders as narrated by Tex Brandaw. As the dust settles, Nick must navigate this web of deception and clear his name, all while protecting his foal and his newfound ally, Luella.
