Plot

Under the relentless New Mexico sun, the landscape is a stark canvas of parched earth and towering clouds, punctured by the echoing crack of a gunshot. From this desolate tableau, a lone figure materializes through the heat haze - Darryl Tripp, a high school English teacher in leather attire and astride a roaring motorcycle. His heart is heavy with the weight of his recently completed novel, a monstrous birth of self-deprecation and despair, which he plans to scatter to the winds. However, fate intervenes in the form of an empty fuel tank, stranding Darryl in this wilderness. A solitary RV, nestled in the scrub, offers a glimmer of hope. Receiving no reply to his knock, Darryl ventures inside, stepping into a world that will irrevocably change his life. As he wraps up a call with his fiancée, the formidable deputy district attorney Helen Kaufman, the RV's owner emerges - Amelia Philips, a hospice nurse, with a chilling grip on her firearm. Behind Amelia, the sight of a lifeless man, marked by a bloody wound, sends a cold shiver down Darryl's spine. Amelia quickly realizes that Darryl has seen too much, and he's unwittingly recruited as her unwilling co-traveler on a journey into the unknown. As the RV trundles away, it carries not only a decaying body and Darryl's abandoned novel, but also two souls seeking solace and salvation on the uncharted paths of New Mexico. Despite the grim premise, Refuge offers an unexpected dose of humor, making for an intriguing watch.
