Plot

In the tumultuous era of 1915 to 1920, the intertwined lives of journalists and activists John "Jack" Reed and Louise Bryant unfurl a tapestry of romance, revolution, and relentless idealism. Meeting in Portland, Oregon, the pair are drawn together by a shared belief in justice for the working class and a fiery sexual attraction. Jack, already a renowned liberal journalist, resonates with Louise, a repressed wife of a dentist using journalism as a ticket to independence. Driven by desire and newfound freedom, Louise joins Jack in New York, immersing herself in a world of radical thinkers, including the likes of playwright Eugene O'Neill and writer/activist Emma Goldman. However, their world is not without its shadows — Louise is often dismissed as a mere featherweight, the latest in Jack's string of girlfriends, or worse, a sexual conquest. Unyielding, Jack persuades Louise to journey with him to Russia in 1917, drawn by the magnetic pull of the Bolshevik Revolution. The revolution, in all its chaotic glory, becomes a turning point in their lives. Jack is enraptured by the success of the working class, while Louise is swept up in the intoxicating fervor of idealism manifesting into reality. Though the revolution sparks hope for change, it also isolates Russia, painting a target on Jack's back as the face of Communism in America. The once bright beacon of their shared dream distorts into a reality far from the idealistic vision Jack and his socialist comrades had anticipated, casting a long shadow on their lives. As the narrative unfolds, the specter of Jack's deteriorating health lingers in the background, neglected in his relentless pursuit of leftist ideals. Woven into this vivid recounting of their lives are present-day interviews with those who knew Jack and Louise, or were conversant with the issues they courageously tackled. "Reds" is a vibrant journey through a pivotal period in history, exploring the complexities of love, politics, and idealism through the eyes of two passionate revolutionaries, forever altered by the winds of change.
