Plot

In the gritty underworld of the 1940s, Nick Cherney, a once-trusted employee, spirals into the abyss of corruption after embezzling funds from the Torno Freight Co., a thriving trucking business owned by the iron-willed John Torno. Cherney's actions land him in the bleak confines of prison, where he seethes with vengeance and plots a sinister scheme against John, targeting his virtuous brother, Jess Torno, an army-chaplain priest freshly returned from gruelling war duties in the Pacific. Cherney manipulates Rocky, a fellow inmate on the brink of freedom, to execute his dark plan. Jess, caught off-guard in the solitude of his hotel room, is mortally wounded. As life seeps from him, he dies in his brother's arms, his last breath carrying a cryptic revelation: the key to his murder lies hidden within the pages of the Bible. Haunted by Jess's dying words, an enraged John embarks on a relentless quest, obsessively hunting for the elusive Gideon Bible that mysteriously vanished from Jess's hotel room. As John delves deeper into this labyrinth of treachery and death, Cherney himself steps out of prison, his heart still ablaze with murderous intent. But as the plot thickens, a surprising twist emerges, a factor none of them had anticipated, something only the slain Jess had foreseen. The story of Red Light (1949) unravels a tangled web of revenge and redemption, where every clue discovered and every turn made only pulls the characters deeper into a maze of deceit and danger.
