Plot

Harry Angstrom, an artificial stone siding salesman from Reading, Pennsylvania, is a man trapped in his past glory as a high school basketball star, known then as 'Rabbit'. His life, now tethered to his loveless marriage with the alcoholic Janice and their young son, Nelson, feels stifling. Janice leans heavily on Harry for survival, showing little interest in him or their son, a responsibility born out of necessity rather than love. On a fated Friday evening, a series of events prompts Harry to quit smoking, sparking a spontaneous decision to abandon his job, his family, and his past life. This, despite Janice's pregnancy. With no plans and only the clothes on his back, Harry embarks on an aimless journey, hoping to escape his disappointments and find fulfillment. His path crosses with Ruth Leonard, a party girl, who he decides to stay with. However, the freedom he seeks remains elusive as he finds himself reacting to life around him rather than shaping it. His attempts to cultivate a semblance of a normal, loving relationship with Ruth are just mere reactions to the world around him. Meanwhile, his past continues to cast a shadow on his present. Reverend Jack Eccles, the family pastor of Janice's family, steps into Harry's life with a mission to guide him back to his estranged family. Amidst the chaos of his life, Harry's journey becomes a quest for self-discovery and meaning. Will he find what he's looking for, or will he merely exchange one disappointment for another?
