Plot

In the heart of the 1930s radio scene, Glory Eden, a melodious siren of the airwaves brought to life by Ginger Rogers, becomes America's much-publicized "Purity Girl". Behind this pristine facade, she is marketed as the epitome of American womanhood to promote the omnipresent Ippsie-Wippsie Washcloths. However, Glory's reality starkly contrasts her public image. She yearns to taste the forbidden fruits of booze, jazz, gambling, and the company of men - a far cry from the virtuous icon she is made out to be. When the shackles of representing purity become too much to bear, Glory teeters on the brink of rebellion. To quench her thirst for freedom while maintaining the image, her sponsor and his eccentric henchmen concoct a plan. Using the vast sea of fan mail as their guide, they select a "professional sweetheart" for Glory, someone who could keep her in check while also boosting her public appeal. Enter Norman Foster, a simple, charming lad from the backwoods of Kentucky, chosen for this peculiar role. He is naïve, unassuming, and far removed from the glitz of radio fame - a perfect counterbalance to Glory's rebellious spirit. However, as Norman tames the fiery Glory, they all quickly learn a valuable lesson: when it comes to matters of the heart, especially young love, it's a game that should not be taken lightly. "Professional Sweetheart" is a delightful blend of pre-Code titillations and satirical jabs, a tale that dances between the line of public virtue and personal desires, all while serving up a generous portion of unexpected romance.
