Plot

In the heart of a quaint village, Savithrikkutty, the eldest daughter of a destitute Nambuthiri Brahmin, finds herself married to an elderly widower, a priest of the same caste. Replacing the widower's sole helper, Amminiyamma, she enters a family consisting of Amminiyamma and Appu, the widower's young son. Her arrival brings no vibrant colors to her marital life, owing to the yawning age gap between her and her husband. As her husband immerses himself in temple affairs, Savithrikkutty, left with nothing but time, finds solace in her chores and the company of Appu, whose peculiar behavior sparks curiosity. In a twist of fate, Aravindan, a young man of wandering nature, returns to his ancestral village. The villagers, not accustomed to youthful vigor, eye him with fascination. Warmly welcomed by his uncle, Kizhakkethil Raman Menon, an advocate for education in a time of its disdain, Aravindan learns about his mother's transformation into a city dweller, now living a life marred by addiction. As the story unfolds, Appu and Savithrikkutty form a deep bond, akin to a mother and child, raising doubts about Appu's paternity. The monotony of Savithrikkutty's life is disrupted when she meets Aravindan during a ritual event. Their shared melancholy draws them closer, creating an unexpected alliance in the otherwise stagnant village life. The story weaves together the lives of these distinct characters, subtly hinting at the undercurrents of dissatisfaction, yearning, and the quest for companionship in a setting faded by age and tradition.
