Plot

In the chilling aftermath of a fatal car crash that claims the lives of renowned newspaperman Lewis Forrester and mysterious actress Alison Ford, the seemingly tranquil landscape of London is stirred into a whirlwind of intrigue and suspicion. Lewis leaves behind his two brothers, the enigmatic portrait painter, Tim, and the daredevil pilot, Dave. The depths of the tragedy unfurl as Scotland Yard unravels a diamond-smuggling syndicate that Lewis was on the brink of exposing, casting a darker shadow over his untimely death. A cryptic postcard, bearing a sketch of a woman's hand cradling a Chianti bottle, becomes the cornerstone of their investigation. Meanwhile, the grieving father of Alison, John Smith, tasks Tim with a poignant commission: to immortalize Alison's likeness from a photograph. As Tim delves into his work, a ghost from the past infiltrates his studio. The presumed-dead Alison appears, only to flee in horror at the discovery of the lifeless body of Jill Stewart, Tim's favored model. Inspector Colby of Scotland Yard finds himself drawn into a labyrinth of deceit as he grapples with Tim's elusive alibi while dodging the manipulative maneuvers of Reg Dorking, a sleazy used-car dealer trying to blackmail Tim with the postcard. The plot thickens when Alison confronts Tim with a shocking revelation: the woman who died alongside Lewis was an innocent hitchhiker, and her own father was embroiled in the sinister diamond-smuggling ring. As the truth unravels, lives hang in the balance, secrets are stripped bare, and loyalties are tested to their breaking point. In the heart of this maelstrom, the portrait of Alison and the enigmatic postcard become the keys to a deadly puzzle, weaving a fatal tapestry that Scotland Yard must unravel to expose the diamond-smugglers' ring. As the lines between innocence and guilt blur, the stakes rise, culminating in a terrifying encounter in Tim's studio. The story of "Portrait of Alison" is a haunting journey into a world of secrets, deceit, and danger, where every revelation may be the last.
