In the vibrant spring of 1958, a young woman named Rose Pamphyle, stuck in a humdrum life in a small French village, dreams of a future that goes beyond her grumpy widower father's store and an impending, uninspiring marriage to the local mechanic's son. Yearning for more than the drudgery-filled life that awaits her, Rose secretly hones her skills on a typewriter, her fingers dancing over the keys with an extraordinary speed that belies her humble surroundings. Her desire for escape leads her to Lisieux in Lower Normandy, drawn by an advertisement for a secretary position posted by Louis Échard, a charismatic insurance agency boss and former sportsman.
