In the heart of Baltimore, the life of Francine Fishpaw, an upper middle class suburban housewife, teeters precariously on the edge of chaos. Despite her golden heart, Francine is relentlessly bullied within the confines of her own home, and her acute sense of smell is powerless against the stench of her crumbling world. The source of her affluent lifestyle - her husband Elmer's X-rated theatre - paints a scandalous backdrop, spurring the protests of their disgruntled neighbors and further darkening the shadow cast over Francine's existence. Elmer, far from providing solace, shamelessly abandons Francine for another woman, adding to her misery. Meanwhile, her children spiral in a whirlwind of their own troubles: her disdainful daughter Lu-Lu is carrying the child of a local troublemaker, and her son Dexter descends into the dangerous embrace of glue-sniffing and an alarming foot fetish, earning him the unsettling title of the neighborhood "stomper". Just when Francine's life seems to be a never-ending tunnel of despair, a glimmer of hope emerges in the form of the debonair Todd Tomorrow. His arrival infuses her life with an unexpected warmth of love and affection, a feeling that had grown alien to her.
