Permanent (2017)

In the heart of 1982, the Dicksons - Jim, Jeanne, and their pre-teen daughter Aurelie - find themselves as the latest additions to a southern town. The local girls are spellbound by Farrah Fawcett-inspired curls, their tongues wagging with endless hair-gossip to match their back-woods accents. Aurelie, in her youthful naivety, pleads for a 'permanent' - a term for a perm outside the south - anticipating a transformative wave of curls to propel her social standing. The family's budget leads them to a Beauty School rather than a lavish salon, a decision that proves disastrous. A disinterested Student-Beautician mishandles the perm timer, the mistake wreaking havoc on Aurelie's hair and, consequently, her fledgling social life. Her peers cruelly label her botched perm an 'afro', and she becomes a target of both verbal and physical taunts. In the wake of this calamity, Aurelie transforms into a charmingly awkward teenager. She must navigate the treacherous waters of junior high with her damaged hair and dented pride, painting a poignant picture of adolescence in the face of adversity.
