Immersed in the rhythm of 1934 Chicago, Arthur Parker, a well-versed yet struggling sheet-music salesman, navigates the Depression era with a song in his heart and a dream in his eyes. Trapped in an unsatisfying marriage to Joan, a puritanical woman who views marital intimacy as a sordid affair, Arthur yearns for more; he dreams of a world where he could live the joyous lyrics of the songs he peddles and escape the mundane confines of his daily life. Joan, however, yearns only for stability and a reliable provider, a role Arthur struggles to fulfill with his current employment. Despite his financial limitations, Arthur secretly harbors ambitions of owning his own record store. While on his sales rounds, Arthur's life takes a melodious turn, when he meets Eileen Everson, a reserved junior-school music teacher. He falls head over heels for her, intrigued by her shy demeanor and captivated by the potential he sees within her. She becomes his muse, his angel, and the embodiment of the happiness he seeks. As Arthur weaves a web of deception about his marital status, their relationship unfolds, revealing the passionate desires hidden beneath Eileen's demure exterior.
