Plot

In a tranquil Japanese hamlet, the horrifying murder of young Emili sends seismic shockwaves. Discovered by four classmates amidst their innocent play, Emili's unsolved death shrouds the village in a chilling mystery. Consumed by sorrow, Emili's mother Asako (Kyoko Koizumi) directs her anguish towards the four girls who, in their youthful fright, profess they cannot recall the killer's visage. A haunting curse is cast upon them - a penance for their silence. This spectral sentence permeates their lives, compelling each girl to confront her guilt as she journeys into adulthood. The echo of Asako's curse reverberates through their existence, igniting a tragic cascade of events. Penance (2012) weaves a haunting narrative of loss, guilt, and the harrowing consequences of silence.
