Patiala House (2011)

In the heart of Southall, London, "Patiala House" unfolds against the vibrant backdrop of a Mini-India, painstakingly built by Gurtej Singh Kahlon, a resilient Sikh patriarch. His determination is sparked from a traumatic past, scarred by the brutal attack his family suffered at the hands of British-born Caucasian skinheads during the 1979 Southall riots. After enduring racial bias from the police and society, Gurtej takes it upon himself to change the narrative and create an environment where his community can thrive, unscathed by prejudice. His son, Parghat Singh Kahlon, fondly known as "Gattu", was once an aspiring cricketer. Under his father's influence, Gattu develops a passion for cricket but his dreams are abruptly shattered when Gurtej, fearing further racial backlash, forbids him from playing for the English team. Resigned to his fate, Gattu trades his cricket dreams for the mundane existence of managing a convenience store, obediently fulfilling his father's wishes without opposition. However, a ray of hope penetrates Gattu's resigned existence when the spirited Simran Chaggal enters his life. She reignites his long-held cricket dreams and, with some clever maneuvering and support from the Kahlon family, manages to secure him a spot on a struggling English cricket team. To protect Gurtej from the shocking truth, Gattu adopts the alias 'Kaali', and his secret life as an emerging cricket star unfolds. But truths have a way of surfacing. When Gurtej eventually discovers his son's defiance, he collapses and ends up in the hospital, disowning Gattu with bitter resentment. With no one in the family to back him up, a shame-ridden Gattu is left with no choice but to publicly announce his 'retirement' from cricket. As the plot thickens, the struggle between dreams and duty, identity and family loyalty, becomes a compelling tale of resilience and redemption.
