Lionheart (1990)

In the gritty underbelly of the French Foreign Legion, the fiercely determined Lyon Gaultier receives the devastating news of his brother's untimely death, a result of unpaid debts to ruthless drug associates in Los Angeles. Isolated in North Africa, Lyon pleads for leave to return home, only to be met with the icy indifference of his superiors. The refusal sparks a daring escape, with Lyon knocking out fellow legionnaires and stowing away on an American-bound steamer. Navigating the treacherous waves of adversity, Lyon lands near New York, a stranger in a foreign land with a singular mission: amass enough fortune to journey to California and provide for his bereaved family. His path intertwines with Joshua, a washed-up, alcoholic ex-street-fighter turned promoter. Joshua introduces him to the shadowy world of bare-knuckle, no-rules fighting, overseen by the enigmatic Cynthia, a woman who orchestrates these brutal spectacles for the secret amusement of America's elite. Arriving in Los Angeles, Lyon discovers his brother's murderers are already in police custody. However, his fight has just begun - now he battles diverse and deadly opponents, from a kilt-wearing Scotsman to a sun-kissed surfer, all for the sake of keeping his widowed sister-in-law Helene and adoring niece Nicole safe from relentless bill collectors. Despite his reluctant immersion into this brutal world, Lyon's only aim is to protect his family, wrapping his financial aid in the guise of an unknown insurance policy. Cynthia, however, is reluctant to lose her lucrative new fighter. She schemes to bring in Attila, a lethal fighter with an unrivaled reputation, to eliminate Lyon. As she bets against Lyon, she also plots to deliver him back to the clutches of the Foreign Legion, right after Attila defeats him. But Lyon, the deserting soldier turned underground fighter, is not one to be underestimated. As he faces his most formidable opponent yet, he also must evade the relentless pursuit of Legionnaires determined to bring him to justice. In this unforgiving world, Lyon must fight for more than survival - he fights for family, honor, and redemption.
