In the thick of World War II, two brave comrades, Balu (Sivaji Ganesan) and Velu (Gemini Ganesan), serve in the British Indian Air Force. On a fateful day, their plane crashes from Japanese bombardment, leaving Velu grievously wounded. Balu, driven by camaraderie and fortitude, carries Velu for 50 miles to a tranquil village in Assam where they find refuge in the house of Indroma (Savithri) and her father.
As Velu regains strength under Indroma's tender care, a spark ignites between them, culminating in a quiet wedding. However, their bliss is short-lived as Velu is whisked away by the British Indian army, leaving a pregnant Indra behind. Tragedy strikes, rendering Indra blind and alone in the ruins of her former village, with Velu believing her to be dead.
Fast forward five years; Balu, now a member of the Indian National Army, is released in Delhi. There, he stumbles upon a blind Indra and her son. Touched by their plight, he promises to reunite them with Velu. In Chennai, Balu's life intertwines with Velu's anew when he discovers that Velu, now married to his maternal uncle's daughter Janaki (Sowcar Janaki), is the owner of the company where he has sought employment.
In the face of these revelations, Balu navigates a complex maze of emotions, truths, and loyalties. As he tries to protect Janaki, who struggles with heart problems, and Velu, who remains oblivious to Indra's survival, he finds love with Janaki's sister, Saro (Saroja Devi).
