Young Parrish McLean stands on the brink of manhood, yet he remains unacquainted with the true essence of being a man. His widowed mother, Ellen McLean, eager to steer him away from a dead-end job in Boston, relocates them to the lush Connecticut River Valley. Here, she takes a job on Sala Post's tobacco farm, assisting Sala's stubborn and motherless daughter, Alison Post, with her debut into society. Despite his lack of knowledge about tobacco farming, Parrish finds himself intrigued by the business. He secures a job as a farmhand on the Post farm, getting tangled in the thorny rivalry between Sala and his arch-rival, Judd Raike.
