Plot

Marcie Cutler, a forensic scientist with the Chicago Police Department, is known for more than just her analytical prowess; she's also the ambitious daughter of the now-retired detective, Mike Cutler. Despite her civilian status, Marcie harbors a burning desire to trace her father's footsteps into the realm of detective work, a decision that would stir disapproval from Mike. Her latest case, partnered with her associate Stanley Deluca, revolves around the mysterious shooting of Ray Stone, a notorious figure in the drug underworld, and a trusted informant of Detective Lisa Grant. Detectives Lisa Grant and Gus Sutton lead the investigation, with Lisa being a trusted protege of Mike Cutler while Gus is a new addition from the San Francisco Police Department, shrouded in an air of mystery. However, Lisa's stellar reputation is marred by personal trauma, including her husband's recent death, leading her down a path of alcoholism likely spurred by emotional turmoil. Marcie's pedigree and impressive performance in her detective classes catch the attention of Lieutenant Donna Sinclair. Sinclair entrusts Marcie, off the record, with a task that could potentially taint the department's reputation - investigating the possibility of corruption within their ranks, as the deceased Ray was found possessing cocaine stolen from police evidence. As she dives into this unofficial assignment, Marcie adopts an unorthodox and perilous approach that might put her in harm's way. To distinguish herself as a proficient detective, she must probe beyond the obvious, uncovering concealed truths about Lisa's struggles and navigating her unexpected attraction towards Gus. The pursuit of truth becomes a journey of self-discovery, pushing Marcie's determination and bravery to their limits.
