One Week (2008)

In the unexpected face of a stage IV cancer diagnosis, the ordinarily risk-averse and contemplative Ben Tyler finds himself at a life-altering crossroads. With survival statistics stacked against him, he forgoes the immediate commencement of treatment, choosing instead to mount a used motorcycle and traverse the vast expanse of Canada from Toronto to the pristine shores of Tofino, British Columbia. His bewildered fiancée, Samantha, left in his wake, can only plead and rage over the phone, her words echoing on the open road, unable to pull him back to the sterile confines of a hospital. Yet, Ben isn't ready to become a patient, to surrender to the sterile sterility of hospital life. He seeks something more, something elusive – could it be the mythical figure from his childhood, Grumps, that he's chasing? As he journeys across the country, Ben finds himself drawn to a series of peculiar "world's largest" roadside attractions, each one a symbol of the world's vastness and his own smallness within it. His camera captures these icons of eccentricity, while his heart records the stories of the strangers he encounters, including two enigmatic women who leave indelible imprints. "One Week" is a vivid chronicle of Ben's quest for meaning, a soul-searching motorcycle trip set against the backdrop of Canada's breathtaking landscapes.
