In the heart of 1947's New York, emerging writer Sal Paradise finds himself at an emotional crossroad; grappling with the raw grief of his father's death and the crippling stagnation of his writing career. On the day of his father's funeral, a chance encounter with his friend and fellow scribe, Carlo Marx, inadvertently sets Sal's life on a new trajectory. An invitation from a mutual friend, Chad, introduces them to the audacious Dean Moriarty, a young car thief hailing from Denver, and his young enchanting wife, Marylou. An unlikely camaraderie blossoms as Sal and Carlo are drawn into Dean's world of reckless abandon, losing themselves in smoky clouds of marijuana and the pulsating rhythm of a jazz nightclub.
