Plot

When timid Oliver Pease finds his courage courtesy of his wife Martha, he manages to swindle his newspaper editor, a man accustomed to assigning him lost pet notices, into giving him the day's wandering question. Martha's proposed inquiry: "Has a humble child ever transformed your existence?" sends Oliver on a journey that intertwines him with the lives of two drawling musicians, a sarong-clad actress and a nomadic cardsharp. In each narrative, the concept of an "innocent child" is humorously distorted: the 'baby' of a local mechanic is a fully matured woman with a flair for music; a pampered child star learns the value of benevolence; and a wandering brat's family shows no interest in his return. As for Oliver, his fate is etched into the fabric of these unpredictable tales. This lively mesh of stories forms an unexpected narrative that explores innocence, transformation, and the often surprising impact of the smallest characters in our lives.
