In the bustling, unrelenting heart of New York City's media circuit, Beatrice (Sarah Polley), a soft-spoken researcher more accustomed to brewing coffee than breaking news, finds herself in the midst of a story that defies the ordinary. Contrary to her hard-nosed, sensation-seeking boss (Dame Helen Mirren), Beatrice possesses an innocence that belies the cutthroat world she inhabits. When her fiancé Jim and his camera crew mysteriously vanish while investigating an ancient Icelandic monster myth, Beatrice persuades her boss to send her on an investigative mission to the chilling landscapes of Iceland. However, the journey takes a tragic turn when her plane crashes, leaving her as the sole survivor. Though considered a miracle by many, Beatrice refuses to be the media's puppet and is abandoned by her boss in the stark, foreign landscape of Iceland. Resilient and undeterred, she continues her quest, determined to uncover what happened to Jim and his crew. In the remote, icy solitude, Beatrice finds herself entwined in a tale more fantastical than anything her media organization could conjure. She encounters the immortal, foul-mouthed Monster (Robert John Burke), a creature disillusioned with the shallow, instant gratification-seeking society that humanity has become. An unlikely friendship forms between the unlikely pair, as Beatrice aids the Monster in his quest to find Dr. Artaud (Baltasar Kormákur), who can help him fulfil his supposed destiny. However, the sensational story lures her boss back, threatening to disrupt Beatrice and the Monster's plans. As the narrative unfolds, the lines between myth and reality blur, and Beatrice finds herself caught in a struggle between sensationalism and truth, friendship and duty.
