Plot

In the vibrant pulse of 1983 New York City, we meet thirteen-year-old Oliver Nicholas, teetering on the cusp of adolescence, ready to plunge into a whirlwind of firsts—love, sex, and vodka. But his rite of passage journey is violently jolted off track when Aida, his housekeeper and only maternal anchor, a 65-year-old Chilean woman, suffers a devastating stroke. This sorrowful event plunges Oliver into a world colored by bewildering depression and a terrifyingly distorted home life. Caught in a maelstrom of female influences, he struggles to hold onto his sanity. His unconventional mother, a Spanish photographer more confidante than mother, his sister, a hilarious yet infuriating presence bearing the scars of her parents' divorce, and Aida, the silver-haired cornerstone of his emotional stability teetering on the edge of mortality in Lenox Hill Hospital. Oliver is thrust into the role of "man of the house", a task that tests his mental fortitude. Amongst the chaos, his band of friends stand as the constant in his life. Nicholas Pinto, Raul Pinto, Valerio, a grandiose, chain-smoking artist with a flair for nunchucks; and Nick, a sardonic, crass humorist. Together, they navigate this frenzied maze of adolescence, battling manic episodes, intoxication, the sweet pain of first love, the sting of betrayal, the perplexing world of sexual awakening, the poignant loss of an imaginary friend, all the while yearning to withstand this quintessentially New York trial by fire.
