Set in the tumultuous era of the 1970s, we meet 15-year-old Agnes Marie "Mooney" Pottie, an introverted dreamer trapped within the confines of New Waterford, a quaint seaside town in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island. Mooney, a misfit in the eyes of her large, devoutly Catholic family and the narrow-minded townsfolk, yearns for an escape, a life far removed from her current existence.
An unexpected glimmer of hope arrives in the form of her teacher, Cecil Sweeney, a lost soul who stumbled into New Waterford in search of his own identity. With his guidance, Mooney clinches a coveted scholarship to an esteemed New York art school. But when her parents clip her wings, refusing to let her go, Mooney concocts a daring plan to break free from her town's suffocating grasp.
Simultaneously, a fragment of the Big Apple finds its way to New Waterford when Lou Benzoa and her dance-teacher mother seek refuge next door to the Potties, fleeing the chaotic Bronx until "the stink dies down." Lou, quick to befriend Mooney, swiftly earns a reputation as the female Equalizer, her strength and resolve only unleashed on those deserving of justice.
This is the tale of two girls, both outcasts in their own right, navigating the complexities of adolescence and the yearning for freedom in a town where dreams are as elusive as the sea's horizon.
