Necessary Roughness (1991)

In the heartland of Texas, 34-year-old farmer Paul Blake once reigned as a high-school football sensation. His career was abruptly benched when family duties called, leaving him to tend the farm after his father's untimely demise. After a 16-year hiatus, the echoes of his past glory resurface when his former coach, Wally "Rig" Riggendorf, presents him with an offer he can't refuse. The Texas State University Armadillos, a team mired in corruption and probation, are desperately in need of a resurrection. The university's newly appointed head coach, Ed Gennero, armed with assistant coach Rig, is tasked with this formidable challenge. University president Carver Purcell is hungry for success, and he wants it fast. In response, Gennero and Rig assemble a motley crew cut from the unlikeliest of cloth. Among them are a Schwarzkopf-worshipping military fanatic, a learned physics instructor, a nimble martial arts champ Eric "Samorai" Hansen, the robust Andre Krimm, and a female kicker Lucy Draper, shattering the glass ceiling with every field goal. Amid the tumultuous comeback, Paul grapples with his new reality, returning to college classes and battling the physical strains of reclaiming his football prowess. He also finds himself irresistibly drawn to the enigmatic journalism professor, Suzanne Carter. Meanwhile, the Armadillos face a formidable adversary in the form of Dean Phillip Elias, who is hell-bent on dismantling the university's football program. With the odds stacked against them, the team must rally to win at least one game this season. "Neccessary Roughness" encapsulates the underdog spirit, a tale of a ragtag team of misfits led by a fading star, rising from the ashes to challenge the mighty Texas Colts. The stakes are high, the hurdles numerous, and the will to succeed is the only scholarship they've got. Will the Armadillos rewrite their fate or will they be swallowed by the relentless whirlwind of college football?
