In the tranquil town of Garrison, Washington, Amy Winslow is no ordinary English Professor. She's an expert in crime fiction at Elmstead College, descended from a lineage of writers, her father, Graham Winslow, a celebrated author in his own right. Following the loss of his wife, Graham returns to his passion for writing, seeking solace in the creation of his newest Atticus Keller mystery novel. Amy, meanwhile, finds herself in the crosshairs of real-life crime, when she suspects the disappearance of two of her students, the studious Lacey Daniels and her boyfriend, Rex Handford. Despite her academic background, Amy’s knack for crime fiction proves to be far from theoretical. She persuades the local Garrison PD that a crime has been committed, thrusting her into a world that blurs the line between fiction and reality. Newcomer Detective Travis Burke from Chicago, and the Police Chief's daughter, the freshly qualified Detective Claire Tate, are handed the responsibility of the investigation. A begrudging partnership forms between Amy, her TA Bud, and the detectives, with Amy’s knowledge of crime fiction offering a unique, and unexpectedly valuable, perspective. As they delve deeper, the team discovers that Lacey and Rex’s involvement with the college newspaper, the Elmstead Current, might be more than coincidental. Two stories catch their attention: one about a computer hacking scandal within the Math Department and another on an alleged plagiarism case involving an unidentified tenured professor. Simultaneously, they link the students' disappearance to a previous case regarding the theft of a groundbreaking, climate-change-resistant plant from the Life Sciences Department, a specimen with a potential market value in the millions. Through this intricate web of crime, Amy and Travis form an unexpected bond, even as Graham, protective of his daughter, seeks assurances for her safety. With her exceptional observational skills and deductive prowess, Amy Winslow transforms from a professor of mystery fiction to an active participant in a series of real-life crimes. Will she help unravel the truth, or will she become the next victim of this unfolding mystery?
