Mrs. O'Malley and Mr. Malone (1950)

In the bustling heart of Chicago, John J. Malone, a lawyer with a knack for bending rules and charming skirts, maneuvers his way through the city's murky underbelly. When Steve Kepplar, his ex-client and convicted robber, is released from prison, Malone finds himself entwined in a chase that's as much about recovering his owed $10,000 as it is about unearthing the elusive stolen $100,000. Despite the dogged determination of Inspector Tim Marino to reclaim all the stolen loot, even at Malone's expense, the shrewd lawyer manages to catch wind of Kepplar's escape plan and boards the same non-stop train to New York. Among the train's motley crew are a host of characters with their own agendas. There's Connie Kepplar, Steve's soon-to-be ex-wife, who's determined to secure her alimony, regardless of its origin. Lola Gillway, the curvaceous girlfriend of Kepplar's associate, also finds herself tangled in the web of intrigue. And then there's Hattie O'Malley, a sharp-tongued Montana farm widow en route to New York, having won a radio contest. When Malone crosses paths with Mrs. O'Malley, their acquaintance from a past chase involving O'Malley's attractive niece, Joanie, adds a touch of familiarity to the brewing chaos. Eager to lend her detective-magazine-honed skills to Malone's quest, Mrs. O'Malley willingly steps into a world of mischief and murder. When Kepplar's body turns up, Malone and O'Malley find themselves in the middle of a lethal game of hide and seek. With a murder investigation afoot, they must scramble to find the killer while simultaneously keeping the corpse hidden, lest they become the prime suspects. As corridors turn into crime scenes and coach compartments into hideouts, the duo navigates the rollercoaster ride, all while the train barrels towards New York. Will they be able to unravel the mystery before reaching their destination? The plot thickens in this high-stakes, fast-paced "murder-on-the-train" mystery.
