Plot

In the heart of Paris, 1942, amidst the chilling atmosphere of German-occupied France, thrives Robert Klein - an art dealer luxuriating in the spoils of war. His world brims with opulence, complete with a well-appointed flat, a captivating mistress, and a booming business. He capitalizes on the desperation of French Jews, forced by discriminatory laws to part with their precious artworks at a fraction of their worth, ensuring Klein's coffers bulge with treasures bought at bargain prices. However, this comfortable existence teeters on the edge when Klein stumbles upon a perplexing revelation - there exists another Robert Klein in Paris. This namesake, a Jew exhibiting peculiar behaviour, throws our protagonist's life into an eerie disarray. As the art trader delves into this mystery, he inadvertently draws the unsettling attention of the police, turning their menacing gaze onto himself. When a Jewish newspaper lands on his doorstep, Klein's curiosity morphs into paranoia. He implores the police to rectify this confusing mix-up, only to find himself painted with the same brush of suspicion that has been haunting the Jews of Paris. Suddenly, he is no longer the exploiter but the exploited, trapped in a spiralling nightmare of identity and suspicion. Consumed by the urgency to both vindicate himself and locate his elusive double, Klein embarks on a harrowing investigation. His quest becomes an obsession, a reflection of his desperation to reclaim his stolen identity and regain his lost life of luxury. As he grapples with this uncanny doppelgänger predicament, he is drawn deep into the grim realities of wartime Paris, forcing him to confront the very world he once profited from.
