Plot

Oliver Boggs, a bland office worker stuck in a rut, has a knack for astonishingly accurate statistical calculations. His mundane existence takes an exciting turn when he wins $1500 in a movie theatre contest, estimating the number of beans in a jar. Emboldened, he quits his job and heads to the dilapidated town of Peckham Falls, where he impulsively purchases a failing barrel factory. With the factory, he also finds love in the form of Irene Lee, the sophisticated niece of Morton Ross, the town's sole wealthy man and proprietor of shuttered canneries. Oliver's optimistic outlook on the factory's prospects baffles Oleander Tubbs and her inventor father Angus, the previous factory owners, but they agree to lend their support. Angus develops a game-changing invention - a collapsible barrel, which Oliver sees as the ticket to prosperity. Investing every penny he has, Oliver convinces Ross to resume operations at the canneries, utilizing Angus's innovative barrels. Everything seems to be falling into place until Dennis Andrews, Ross's cunning lawyer, hatches a scheme to cheat Angus out of his patent rights and swindle both Ross and Oliver. As Oliver navigates this twist, his unassuming demeanor belies a surprising resilience. The future of his factory, his love for Irene, and the fate of the entire town hang in the balance, making for a captivating tale of ambition, love, and deception.
