Plot

Aspiring stage actress Ada Love, adopting the stage name Eva Lovelace, descends upon New York City with a pocketful of dreams and meagre resources. Trained on the amateur theater scene in her hometown of Franklin, Vermont, Eva is more dazzled by the stars than being one herself. But she clings onto an undying belief that she can blossom into a remarkable actress, given the right part. To mask her thin resume, she paints a picture of grandiosity to those she encounters. She pins her hopes on making an impression on Broadway impresario Louis Easton, and rising playwright Joseph Sheridan. Easton, a seasoned player in the game of show business, knows the importance of casting big names to reel in the crowds. He often collaborates with Rita Vernon, an actress with a diva's flair, who can be unpredictably brilliant or disastrously wrong for her roles. Eva's initial meeting with Easton and Sheridan results in her managing to get her foot in the door, thanks to a budding friendship with R.G. Hedges, Easton's earliest client. To them, Eva appears as a naive, over-eager young woman, rather than a polished actress. Yet, she intrigues them and they find themselves concerned about her fate, though not to the extent of offering her a leading role. As Eva navigates the harsh realities of New York life, clinging onto any work she can find, her relationships with the trio of men in her life become more personal than professional. She dreams of an opportunity, a break that might allow her to truly shine on stage, and prove her worth. But as she stands on the precipice of her dreams, Eva must also grapple with the uneasy truth that professional success doesn't always guarantee personal happiness. Is she destined to be a morning glory, blooming briefly before fading away? Or will she conquer the casting couch and seize the stardom she so fervently desires?
