In a humble village tucked away in the heart of Africa, a chilling tradition casts a shadow over the lives of six young girls between the ages of four and nine. It's a day marked by a brutal custom - female genital mutilation, an act that is as horrifying as it is lethal. The village is steeped in the knowledge of its consequences; the scarring ordeal and a future where childbirth is only possible through Caesarean sections. Two girls choose a tragic escape, drowning in the village well rather than face the ritual.
The remaining four, driven by fear and desperation, seek sanctuary in the "moolaadé" - a mystical protection offered by Colle, a brave woman who seven years prior, refused to let her own daughter undergo the same horrifying ritual. The presence of moolaadé, signified by a vibrant rope, creates a force field around the children that no villager dares to cross. Only Colle has the power to revoke it.
As the tension escalates, Colle's husband's family persuades him to publicly coerce her into lifting the protection. A chorus of women echo through the village, some pleading for Colle to revoke the moolaadé, others urging her to remain unwavering. Yet, none dare to intervene.
On the brink of collapse, Colle's suffering is halted by the unexpected interference of a merchant. His audacity to defy tradition marks him an outcast, leading to a tragic end beyond the village borders. Moolaadé is a gripping tale of courage and defiance in the face of oppressive traditions, painting a vibrant portrait of an African village torn between the old and the new.
