Plot

In Alejandro Landes's mesmerizing third feature, MONOS, a saga of survival and savagery unravels against the isolated backdrop of a mountain in Latin America. An eclectic band of adolescent soldiers and rebels, christened with monikers such as Rambo, Smurf, Bigfoot, Wolf, and Boom-Boom, exist in a paradoxical world where their days are consumed by rigorous military drills and their nights by the carefree abandon of youth. Their unconventional kinship is forged under the enigmatic entity known only as The Organization, as they are entrusted with the guardianship of an American hostage, Doctora (Julianne Nicholson). However, when an ambush propels them into the tempestuous heart of the jungle, the mission and their complex web of relationships crumble under the weight of chaos. The once ordered world they knew disintegrates, giving way to a brutal struggle for power where the strong feed on the weak in a haunting, cautionary fever-dream. As the narrative of MONOS unfolds, it lays bare the absurdity and bedlam of war through the innocent yet tarnished lens of adolescence. Bathing in the ethereal score of Mica Levi, Landes's masterful storytelling echoes shades of LORD OF THE FLIES and BEAU TRAVAIL, yet carves a path that feels refreshingly uncharted. The film features a diverse ensemble of young actors, blending seasoned talents like Moisés Arias of Hannah Montana fame with raw newcomers, all plunged into a volatile, often surreal world where the unexpected is the norm, and the possibility of peace remains as elusive as it is tantalizing.
