Mike Bassett: England Manager (2001)

When England's national football manager tragically falls victim to a heart attack, the hunt for a replacement sends shockwaves through the sports world. The job, daunting in its pressure and prestige, is turned down by those sensible enough to avoid the limelight. This leaves the unlikely Mike Bassett, a rough around the edges, boisterous character, whose only claim to fame is steering an obscure team to a league title, to take the reins. Swallowing the responsibility whole, Bassett audaciously promises a World Cup victory under his command. However, this before he gambles on a past-his-prime, alcoholic footballer to replace his star player and recruits a former car salesman as his right-hand man. Desperate to reform his squad, he employs the unconventional training techniques of the quirky Dr. Shoegaarten, which only serve to sideline more players than they revitalise. Despite Bassett's blunders, England finds itself qualifying for the World Cup tournament, courtesy of Turkey's final game defeat. With a glimmer of hope, Bassett and his motley crew jet off to Rio, daring to dream that they can reverse their misfortune and achieve footballing glory.
