Under the spectral glow of a tempestuous Vermont night, seasoned midwife Sibyl Danforth finds herself entwined in a home birth fraught with danger. As the expectant mother's labor stalls, Sibyl is gripped by the harsh realization that a hospital delivery is the safer route. Yet, Mother Nature proves a cruel mistress, severing communication lines and barricading their path with icy obstacles and relentless snow.
As dawn breaks, calamity strikes. The mother succumbs to what appears to be a stroke, her life fading away in the chaotic maelstrom. In the face of this heartrending tragedy, Sibyl makes a desperate decision to perform a C-section in a bid to salvage the innocent life within.
The child emerges, a beacon of life amidst the shroud of death. But the storm is far from over for Sibyl. Accusations swirl like the snow outside, her assistant adamant that the mother still clung to life during the emergency procedure. These allegations lead Sibyl into the cold clutches of the court, charged with manslaughter. Her life, once devoted to birthing lives, is irrevocably altered, the tranquility of her past replaced with the chill of accusation and guilt.
