Plot

In the serene landscape of his hometown, Kang Min Woo leads a life of tranquility, sharing a close bond with his younger brother, Jin Woo. Min Woo's heart throbs for Park Shin Ae, a lovely nurse he met at a church gathering and a dear friend to Jin Woo. He concocts a simple scheme under the guise of sympathy for his over-studious brother to coax Shin Ae into a movie date. Their quiet lives are shattered when, in the midst of their cinematic diversion, the theater is engulfed in a cloud of smoke. A horrifying scene unfolds as soldiers storm in, unleashing a violent rampage on the unsuspecting citizens. Park Heung Su, Shin Ae's father and a former general himself, seeks answers from General Choi, who orchestrates this infiltration. However, his pleas fall on deaf ears and the soldiers' relentless assault continues unabated. The terrified yet defiant citizens rally together, forming a homegrown militia to protect their loved ones. In the midst of this chaos, Jin Woo, driven by anger and the loss of a friend, mobilizes a group of students to retaliate, only to be met with bullets, turning the streets into a grim battlefield. Min Woo, having narrowly escaped capture, returns to witness the horrifying sight of his brother being shot down amidst the fleeing crowd. Overwhelmed with grief and fury, Min Woo swears vengeance against the perpetrators, even if it costs him his life. "May 18" is a heartrending tale of love, loss, and defiance, capturing the essence of an ordinary town thrust into extraordinary circumstances. As the citizens fight back against the brutalities inflicted upon them, the film paints a poignant picture of courage amidst chaos.
