In the heart of Venice, Cesare, a former department head responsible for assimilating the infected 'Returnees' into society, grapples with a system he can no longer support. Repelled by the dehumanizing treatment of these once-human beings, Cesare resigns from his post, detesting their servitude status. The city teeters on the brink of chaos as the risks and accidents associated with the Returnees escalate, prompting the Doge of Venice to contemplate their total eradication. His wife, succumbing to the infection years before, is now a Returnee, hidden away from the world within their home.
