The relationship between Mary and Max proves that friendship can come from the strangest of places. She's a plain and lonely child from Australia, and he's an obese middle-aged man from New York City. It starts as an unsolicited letter mailed from Mary to Max and is fostered when he mails her back his own letter with a chocolate bar attached. What follows is a surprisingly deep correspondence that covers the course of two decades and the ups and downs of both friends. As time passes and Max ages, will they ever have the chance to actually meet in person?
