Plot

Amid the tranquil fields of Arkansas, a teenage girl embarks on a profound journey of self-discovery. Marjoun, with her headscarf billowing and her heart pounding astride a motorcycle, traverses the turmoil left in the wake of her father's unjust imprisonment. The year is 2006, a time when Arab and Muslim Americans grapple with the repercussions of being wrongfully detained due to "guilt by association". Marjoun's story intertwines with the historic struggle of the Little Rock Nine, as she navigates the hallowed halls of Central High School. Her narrative is emblematic of the broader civil rights struggle faced by Arab/Muslim Americans, echoing the hardships endured by African Americans in the past. As the tale unfolds, it extends to the serene confines of Magnolia Grove Monastery in Mississippi. This Zen Buddhist monastery, a testament to the enduring bond between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, serves as a symbol of unity and interfaith practice. It acts as a peaceful backdrop against the tumult of Marjoun's world. "Marjoun and the Flying Headscarf" is a poignant expansion of the eponymous short film, a Sundance Film Festival official selection. It is a compelling exploration of identity, faith, and the enduring struggle for civil rights.
