Plot

In the stifling heat of summer 1910, renowned Austrian composer Gustav Mahler finds himself ensnared in a web of jealousy, seeking the guidance of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. Tormented by an insidious envy, Mahler is compelled to restore tradition in his marriage to the vibrant Alma, a gifted composer herself, who is nearly four decades his junior. He yearns for the simplicity of domesticity from Alma, a desire she acquiesces to, despite her own creative ambitions. Yet, the catalyst for Mahler's visit to Freud's couch is a love letter - a poignant confession of illicit love, addressed to Mahler but meant for Alma. Penned by Walter, a young, charismatic architect, the letter unveils the intricate details of his passionate affair with Alma. Shattered by the revelation, Mahler turns to Freud, navigating the labyrinth of his emotions. Embarking on this introspective journey, Mahler recounts their love story from its budding stages, his plea for Alma to abandon her musical aspirations for him, and the grandeur of their love. 'Mahler on the Couch' unfurls this poignant tale, painting a vivid portrait of love, sacrifice, and the complexities of the human heart.
